TEN year old girl gives birth to baby in Colombia

A Colombian girl has become one of the worlds youngest ever mothers after giving birth to a healthy baby girl at the age of just TEN years old.

The child is a member of the Wayuu tribe in the La Guajira Peninsula, which has a certain amount of autonomy from the Colombian government. Similar cases of young children giving birth have been reported by members of the Wayuu tribe in the past.

The girl arrived at the hospital bleeding, crying and in enormous pain from the contractions at 39 weeks pregnant. It was the first time she had visited a doctor in relationship to her pregnancy.

Doctors decided to carry out a caesarian operation because of the girls age.

Both mother and baby are said to be doing well.
